Quick Solutions to Weatherproofing Problems
...from Frostking
Adding weatherstripping to your home has always been about two things: comfort and energy savings. Here are some quick and easy answers to typical problems that come up just about every year in many homes.
PROBLEM: Frigid air radiates through the window glass.
SOLUTION: Invest in window insulation kits. They increase R-Value (resistance to heat flow) of single pane window and patio doors by nearly 90% and keep cold air out. If a window`s R-value is high, it will lose less heat than one with a lower R-value.
PROBLEM: Air, dust and dirt are coming in under the door.
SOLUTION: Replace or get a door sweep and/or threshold to help seal gaps under the door.
PROBLEM: Air leaks in around the windows.
SOLUTION: Apply a self-adhesive foam tape to help fill gaps around windows for a better seal.
PROBLEM: Loose fitting door that allows air to leak in around the top and sides.
SOLUTION: Use self-adhesive tape or a more permanent door set to help tighten and seal leaks.
PROBLEM: Dirt, leaves and dust come in around the garage doors.
SOLUTION: Invest in garage door bottom kits or top and side kits to seal gaps, stop leaves, dust and water from coming in around the garage door.
PROBLEM: Drafts come in around or through the window air conditioner unit.
SOLUTION: You need high compressible foam to insulate around the window air conditioner as well as an air conditioner cover to prevent drafts from passing thru during the winter.
