Our Opal was delivered three weeks ago. Since then, my wife and I have congratulated ourselves every day for making such a great purchase. The Opal makes great ice, but it helps us in other ways also. We don't have to open the freezer compartment on our refrigerator so often now, so it stays colder. Also, we have been able to reclaim some space in that tiny compartment now that we no longer need an ice bin in it. The Opal just makes iced drinks more fun. I've even found that by filling an old fashioned glass with the ice pellets and adding a half jigger of Bourbon, I can have an adult snow cone. My only regret is that we didn't buy this thing years ago.

I was given this ice maker as a gift from my boyfriend. I love it so far. I enjoy the small ice chunks, when they get wet they turn into ice crystals so good! My daughter and her friends also live the ice maker. It is fairly fast at producing a full bucket. Maybe 45-60 minutes.
It can be noisy but not very often. It really doesn't bother me at all. It fits on my kitchen counter. Eventually I would love a pretty bar cart with room for the ice maker and some pretty bar ware. My boyfriend purchased the extended warranty because reviews on all the ice makers out there were not great but so far I am loving mine!

Pros
- When it works, it makes really nice, soft pellet ice.
- It looks good on your counter if 1) you have space and 2) your other appliances are also stainless steel.
Cons
- It is quite large and requires enough space (3") around the back and sides to allow for ventilation. It barely fits under standard upper cabinets.
- It is heavy (more than 40 pounds with no water in it), which would be fine if you didn't need to move it, but according to the manual you're supposed to clean it every week. This requires pulling the entire unit out enough to access the back and either moving it close enough to the sink for the drain hoses to reach, or using a bucket below counter level to allow gravity to drain it. The fact that it barely fits under cabinets makes moving it more difficult.
- If the unit is placed beneath upper cabinets, the water reservoir can be difficult to remove for refilling, which you need to do every few days if you're using ice regularly. It has to lift up and out of the base, which is attached to a hose that is barely long enough to reach the back of the unit, so that cannot be moved.
- It is loud enough when running optimally that you can hear it in the kitchen even when the dishwasher is running, which can get annoying if you have a quiet house. Sometimes it makes strange whirring and squeaking noises that are even louder, have no noticeable reason, and require turning the machine off for awhile for it to settle down.
- The single button on the front uses some sort of capacitive sensor to tell if you are touching it rather than a tactile mechanism. This is especially frustrating when the button decides to not respond to your touch because there is just no feedback. The manual suggests touching with the palm of your hand, presumably to maximize the surface area that will activate the button, which is just silly. I've stood in front of this machine attempting to get it to register my touch for a minute before just unplugging it to turn it off.
- Cleaning is a chore. I've only had the unit for a month and I'm not looking forward to years of cleaning this every week or so.
- The first unit we purchased just stopped working after about 2 weeks. It got really loud, didn't make ice, and constantly went into cleaning mode with no way to reset it without unplugging it. They did ship another unit quickly, but the process of moving and re-packing such a heavy device was frustrating. The new unit is making ice so far after a week, but there has been at least once instance where the button did not respond to touch again.
We bought this machine because we really wanted pellet ice and it looked nice enough to display in the kitchen, where we would actually need the ice. Most other units were either too large/ugly or too expensive, but I honestly may have preferred to pay more for a unit that could remain stationary and made more ice, even if that meant going to another room. Had I known about the noise, usability/reliability issues, and maintenance requirements of this unit, I probably would not have paid this much for it.

I've been happy with the performance. However, the ice maker will turn off when I pull the ice storage bin out for no reason. It will sometimes restart but other times I will have to push the start button.

We have had this GE Opal ice maker for one month now, and it has run perfectly! It was easy to set up, run, and produces perfect, soft, small ice VERY similar to Sonic ice! One fill of the reservoir will produce two tubs of ice. You CAN then freeze it, but it will stick together and be less chewable, but still OK. We only put filtered water (using a Brita faucet filter) OR distilled water in the unit. We have a 3qt home water distiller. So far, no issues.

I've had the Opal for about a month and I am very pleased with it. It makes ice quickly and the feature that it re-uses water to continuously make ice is great, so the bin is always full. the only complaint would be that it seems to be priced a bit too high.

I got this for Christmas and was thinking it would be the slush ice, but it nuggets that I love. Took a bit to set up and was nervous about first clean. But it went smoothly. My only complaint is the awful screeching it makes while on defrost.

Love the ice it makes, but hate the maintenance it takes to clean it every couple days. It makes a horrible screeching sound several times a week. It is so bad that I have to unplug it when it makes that noise.

Only lasted 5 months before breaking down. Still under warranty, so requested replacement. Took 2 months to get replacement. Replacement didn't work until I figured out that the A and B hoses were reversed. Both units very noisy.

Love this product. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the ice melts quickly so it's watery in the bottom if it sits for any amount of time. Expensive product for it not to have some kind of freezing element to it.

We love our ice machine so far. The pellet ice and price sets this machine apart from the rest. We have used it for a few months now and so far so good. We usually have to fill up the side water tank every other day for a family of 5. This machine makes ice fast and has an easy set up.

We received Opal as a gift from our parents, who have the device both in their home and business. We loved using it there, and use it in our home constantly. A New York Times article recently referred to the product as creating the "Sonic Ice" and "The Good Ice"; I'd agree.
The chunks of ice are pellet-sized, with a very light crunch; addictive to ice crunchers to finish the cup. The product itself is small enough for my residential kitchen, but commercial grade.

This compact machine produces great little ice cubes. They are soft, if you are an ice cruncher. It makes the ice quickly but it is small so doesn't produce much for larger families, which is why I only gave 4 stars.

I've had my Opal Profile Nugget Ice maker for A little over a month now and, I absolutely love it. I can turn it on and off from my phone, it is easy to fill with water, as needed, it makes a delicious bucket of nugget ice quickly, and it's the good ice. Very disappointing. Made one batch of ice and the darn thang broke. Tried all the trouble shooting steps the techs suggested and still no ice. They are sending a replacement unit. Going on two weeks and it still has not arrived. And the kicker is the replacement will be a repaired unit, not new. If I wish I could just get my money back.

We purchased our machine 3 months ago and it stopped working a month ago. It would make oce just fine in the beginning and now it will make about 1 cup of ice and then stop and blink yellow. I completed the cleaning process 3 times in one week before I decided to just give up on my dream of having pebble ice.
